Team Spotlight: Get to know—Dion

From building robust cloud integrations to exploring how AI tools can help developers work smarter, Dion is always close to where technology meets real customer value. At Tapkey, he leads the integration of the Tapkey Cloud with DOM’s on-premises smart access systems, while also working on new features and keeping an eye on scalability, reliability and future technologies.

Curious, passionate and lightly stubborn, Dion enjoys solving technical challenges, learning new things and building products that do exactly what customers need them to do.

When he is not working, you will most likely find him in the mountains, on a bike, running, bouldering, skiing or enjoying a strong espresso. Time to get to know him better.

Hi Dion, thank you for your time. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what your job entails?

At Tapkey, I am responsible for leading the integration of the Tapkey Cloud with DOM’s on-premises smart access systems. This means extending Tapkey with new features and making sure it remains a scalable and robust product that lives up to customers’ expectations.

Another important part of my work is internal developer enablement. I define strategies for how the Tapkey team can use and stay up to date with new technologies and tools, such as LLMs and AI agents. The goal is to help us deliver better features faster and work smarter as a team.

What do you like most about your job and what is the biggest challenge?

I enjoy building products that work well and meet customers’ expectations. Products that solve a real problem and, so to say, scratch an itch.

In my day-to-day work, I constantly have to learn new things and solve new technical problems. No day is exactly the same, and that is what makes my job exciting.

The tech world is constantly evolving, much faster than any person could ever keep up with. Understanding which technologies, tools and ways of working are truly useful, and which ones are just unnecessary noise or hype, is very challenging.

But at the same time, that is also what makes the job exciting.

Can you share the best career lession you’ve learned so far?

As an engineer, I have learned that my responsibility is not just to write code or come up with smart technical solutions. It is also about developing a true understanding of the product and the customers’ needs.

This has helped me become more focused and strategic in the way I work and build products.

What separates Tapkey from other employers?

Tapkey is a company where you are truly encouraged to think outside the box and always challenge the status quo. People are not taken for granted, and everyone’s ideas are heard and appreciated.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

I love being in the mountains, hiking in summer and skiing in winter. I also love sports in general, from running and biking to bouldering.

Software engineering and computer science are also a big part of my life outside work, so I spend some of my free time reading up on new topics, learning new concepts and working on side projects.

What’s a fun fact about you that many people may not know?

I grew up in Kosovo and learned German as a small kid while watching cartoons on German television. That is actually one of the reasons why I ended up in Vienna for my studies.

If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I would love to meet Carl Sagan. His show Cosmos is truly inspiring, and I would love to have open-ended conversations with him about science, the universe and humanity’s future.

Espresso!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Teleporting! That would be really useful.
