Team Spotlight: Get to know—João

Hi João, thank you for your time. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what your job entails?

I’m a DevOps engineer, which means I connect the Development and Operations teams. My job is to make sure everything runs smoothly — from coding to deployment — by setting up automation wherever possible. This helps speed things up, reduces errors, and makes life easier for everyone involved. Efficiency is always my top priority, and I’m constantly looking for ways to improve how we work.

What do you like most about your job and what is the biggest challenge?

In IT you always have to be constantly learning, and that is even more true in DevOps. I’m passionate about trying out new tools and figuring out how to make things better. Every week feels different because my tasks constantly change — it keeps the job exciting.

The biggest challenge is handling the huge amount of information. Since DevOps connects two worlds — development and operations — I need to understand both sides. That means learning a wide range of tools, systems, and processes. It takes time, but it’s worth it when everything comes together.

Can you share the best career lession you’ve learned so far?

The best lesson I’ve learned is that big problems are less scary when you break them down into smaller ones. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when facing a huge challenge, but taking a step back, analyzing it, and tackling one piece at a time makes it manageable — and often faster to solve.

What separates Tapkey from other employers?

Definitely the people. Everyone here works well together and supports each other. From day one, I felt welcome. My onboarding process was smooth, and whenever I needed help, someone was always ready to jump in. It really feels like a team, and that makes a big difference.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

I like to spend time with friends, play video games, and catch up on TV shows. I also enjoy learning — especially new things in IT — and I’m working on improving my German. When I get the chance, I love to travel and explore new places.

What’s a fun fact about you that many people may not know?

Even though Portuguese is my first language, I’m not great at it — I make a lot of grammar mistakes. Luckily, Portuguese is flexible enough that people still understand me. It’s a funny thing about languages — sometimes being understood matters more than being perfect.

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

Keep going. Things might get tough, but if you stick with it and don’t give up, things will get better.

If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Michio Kaku. He’s a physicist who talks about what the future could look like using today’s science. I love hearing him explain complex ideas in a way that makes you feel like anything is possible.

Three words to best describe you.

Positive, open-minded and fun.

What is the one thing, you can’t live without?

My phone. Let’s be honest — almost everything we need is on it now. It makes life easier, and I’m totally fine with that.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation. Imagine skipping traffic, airports, and long trips. I’d love to just appear wherever I need to be — no more wasting time commuting.

Favourite book?

The eye of the world  by Robert Jordan. Fantasy book, of the same style of Lord of the Rings. There’s also a TV adaptation on Prime Video that’s worth checking out.
